Sheriff's office gets treadmills at desks

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - If you're feeling restless, don't walk off the job, walk on the job.

In Kansas, the Johnson County Sheriff's Department has found that's a great way to keep its staff in shape.

"They only go two miles an hour. So there's no running, no jogging. It is simply a slow walk. We can't have people out of breath while they are trying to dispatch," said Matt Magee, Johnson County master deputy.

Magee says so far he hasn't lost his breath while testing out the Johnson County Sheriff's Office's new treadmill desks.

"I use it on a regular basis. I work at three in the morning. So it's kind of nice to come in and start on the treadmill," said Deputy Tom Erickson.

"What this allows is they can do their job and they can also be moving at the same time. And it helps keep them alert," said Magee.

Deputies can choose whether or not they want to use the treadmill desk or a traditional desk and chair.

"One of the big differences between being a dispatcher versus most desk jobs is that they just can't get up and walk away. They have to stay at their desk," said Magee.

Deputies say studies show sitting at a desk for 8-12 hours a day can have a negative impact on someone's health.

"People that sit for eight or more hours a day have a 40 percent more likelihood of dying within 15 years of retirement. That is significant," said Magee.

If for any reasons a dispatcher decides they want to stop walking all it takes is the push of a button.

"They know the number one priority is the people we serve and the officers we serve. So walking on a treadmill becomes very secondary," said Magee.
