South City "knockout game" all a lie

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – A reported "knockout game" attack outside a St. Louis bar attracted national attention. And according to new information, it was all a lie.

Ashley Depew, 23, and her 25-year-old boyfriend, Justin Simms, were charged with falsifying a police report. The pair told police that Depew was randomly punched in the eye by a group of men outside the Trophy Room on Arsenal last month.

Police say the truth is that her boyfriend hit her. Chief Sam Dotson said the incident hurts the perception of the city.

"It's frustrating that this becomes viral on social media," he said. "Believe it or not, people lie to the police occasionally and we have a much higher standard, the police, law enforcement, to investigate a crime."

NewsChannel 5 did not originally investigate the story because we checked in with St. Louis police and they told us about the inconsistencies in the woman's story.
