Study shows risks of men having children near middle age

KSDK – A new study shows that children who were conceived when their fathers were over the age of 45 were more likely have ADHD, autism and struggle with substance abuse and depression.

Children with older fathers were shown to have 13 times the risk of ADHD, three and a half times the risk of autism and were more likely to struggle with substance abuse and attempt suicide.

Fertility experts say the longer both men and women wait to have a baby, the more likely they are to have complications.

"Try to have a baby before 30 years old instead of after 30 years old," Dr. Harry Fisch said. "And certainly with a partner of a similar age."

Experts suspect as men age, they're exposed to more environmental toxins – which might lead to DNA mutations in their sperm.
