ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - A Normandy High School junior remains behind bars on a charge of promoting child pornography.
Martez Young-Caldwell, 17, recorded a video of a 16-year old boy and a 15-year old girl involved in a sex act inside the school.
We're told the three teens skipped class, went to an undisclosed part of the building and engaged in sexual activity. He recorded them and then turned the camera on himself.
Young-Caldwell showed friends. It quickly got to security, and Wellston police were called in.
Wellston Police Chief G. Thomas Walker says when the young man confessed, he told them he didn't realize he could get in trouble for making the recording or sharing it.
"At 17, he's just a year past being a juvenile himself. And I don't think he realized the gravity of the situation and how serious it was. Otherwise, he wouldn't have put himself on the video and probably wouldn't have shown it to anyone else," Chief Walker said.
We spoke with Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician Dr. Tim Jordan at the camp he runs in Farmington, Camp Weloki, about the likelihood that a 17-year old could really not know recording two teens having sex in a school was wrong.
"First of all, my guess is in the moment he wasn't thinking of the consequences because he's a young man, and hormones get in the way and you want to get some notoriety and all those kinds of things. So sometimes all that energy overrides your prefrontal cortex which would have told you maybe this isn't a good idea," Dr. Jordan said.
Dr. Jordan says kids need more education about consequences of what they record on their cell phones. That education, he says, starts with parents.
Martez-Young Caldwell remains locked up on $25,000 bond.
