Trial underway of Illinois man accused of killing 8

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - Opening statements were given in the trial in Illinois of a man accused of killing eight people in 2008.

The murder trial that got underway Monday in Rock Island is Nicholas Sheley's third. The 34-year-old Sheley pleaded not guilty in the deaths of 29-year-old Brock Branson; 20-year-old Kilynna Blake; her 2-year-old son, Dayan; and 25-year-old Kenneth Ulve.

The (Sterling) Gazette reports ( Assistant Attorney General Bill Elward told how, over seven days, eight people in Illinois and Missouri were killed by Sheley.

Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin reminded jurors they should listen to all the evidence before deciding Sheley's fate.

Sheley still faces trial in the deaths of an Arkansas couple found dead in Missouri. He is serving two life sentences for the murders of a Galesburg man and Sterling resident.
