St. Louis (KSDK) - Happy Flag Day! Thursday is the day to celebrate the red white and blue, and marks the American flag's 235th birthday.

On June 14, 1777 the continental congress approved the first design for the national banner. It had 13 stripes and 13 stars to represent the original colonies.

More stars were added as states joined the union.

The last new star, number 50, was added in 1960 for Hawaii.
