ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - St. Louis ranks 19th in a new car affordability study.
The study conducted by Interest.com, ranked the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the United States on their affordability to purchase new cars.
Based on the region's income and car insurance costs, Interest.com found that the typical St. Louis area resident can afford to spend up to $371 a month on a car. However, the average new car costs considerably more than that, approximately $600 per month.
"What this research indicates, more than anything, is that a lot of Americans are spending too much money on their cars," said Mike Sante, managing editor of Interest.com.
Below is the full list by Interest.com on how much a median- income household, in each metro area studied, can afford to spend on a vehicle. Interest.com recommends that households spend no more than the following amounts on vehicle payments each month.
