KSDK -- He had signed off on its funding, but it was not until after it was finished that former President Dwight D. Eisenhower finally saw the Gateway Arch in person.
On November 13, 1967, Eisenhower pulled up in a limousine to the Arch Grounds. There, William Crowdus of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association presented him with an inscribed souvenir booklet.
The 77-year-old former president looked up at the huge national monument in awe as he entered the museum area. There he waited for the tram to come down, so that he could board it for a ride to the top. Eisenhower praised the monument, calling it "a wonderful thing."
