(CNN) - China researchers have found a way to transform human urine into brain cells.

They were able to re-program kidney cells harvested from urine samples into immature of brain cells, called neutral progenitor cells.

The technique could be used to treat brain-attacking diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

The research appears in the journal Nature Methods.
