ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Gun control has been a hot topic since the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, and two Missouri lawmakers are at very different ends of the debate.

Missouri State Rep. Mike Leara, R - St. Louis County, has proposed legislation that would make it a felony for lawmakers to propose gun control legislation in the Missouri General Assembly.

Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D - University City, is sponsoring a Senate bill which would create several offenses including failure to prevent illegal firearm possession and negligent storage of a firearm.

SB 124 states that a person "commits the offense if he or she is the parent of guardian of a child under the age of 18, he or she knows the child possesses a firearm in violation of the law, and he or she fails to stop the possession or report it to law enforcement. "

Chappelle-Nadal's bill also requires a parent or guardian to notify the school their child attends if they own a firearm.
