Rio de Janeiro prepares for Carnaval

Revelers march past new construction during a pre-Carnival march of the Unidos da Tijuca samba school through the historic Afro-Brazilian port district on February 20, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Carnival officially begins on February 28 but pre-festivities have already begun. The area contains centuries of history and remains a vibrant part of Afro-Brazilian identity; it was once known as Little Africa. Ahead of the 2014 World Cup and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Rio has started a multibillion dollar urban renewal program of the port district. The Porto Maravilha project is expected to displace around 1,000 local residents.
