Jupiter, FL (KSDK) - St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright has suffered an arm injury and could be out for the entire 2011 season.
When asked if the prognosis was encouraging, General Manager John Mozeliak said he was not encouraged during a news conference Wednesday morning in Jupiter, Fl.
Wainwright threw on Monday during batting practice and St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa said his pitcher felt stiffness in his elbow in the afternoon.
He had an MRI in Jupiter on Tuesday.
Mozeliak said it could be ligament damage and he could need Tommy John surgery. If that is the case, he would be done for the season.
La Russa called it a "huge hit" for the team and said, "it appears to not be good."
Mozeliak said Wainwright is flying back to St. Louis for treatment.
