St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A controlled burn took place at Forest Park late Friday morning. It happened in the north east section of the park, north of the Muny and Deer Lake.

Fourteen acres of a natural area in the park were scheduled to be burned. Forest Park officials say this is being done to get rid of invasive plants such as bush honeysuckle. They say burning is more cost effective and time efficient than mowing the area.

The burn was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and was conducted by DJM Ecological Services. The St. Louis Fire Department also had a crew standing by.

This burn was originally scheduled for last spring, but the weather conditions forced a cancelation.

Residents and businesses located within a mile of the park were notified by Forest Park workers about the controlled burn.
