Jennings, MO (KSDK) - The St. Louis County Police Department is reporting crime statistics have decreased in the City of Jennings during the first year that St. Louis County has provided full police services, though homicides, rapes, and robberies increased.
Five homicides were reported in 2011, while three were reported in 2010. Police say the victims in all five homicides knew the suspects. Six rapes were reported in 2011, compared to five in 2010; 62 robberies compared to 40; nine arsons compared to six; and 497 burglaries compared to 491.
Aggravated assaults were down to 117 from 195; motor vehicle thefts were down to 85 compared to 150; and larcenies were down to 454 compared to 529.
Mayor of the City of Jennings, The Honorable Benjamin C. Sutphin, is happy with the statistics.
"We are very pleased with the services of the St. Louis County Police. We appreciate their professionalism and are pleased with the progress they have made in reducing the crime rate in Jennings," he said. "We have also been impressed with the speed at which crimes are solved and arrests made. Many Jennings residents have told me that they feel safer in their community."
"This reduction of 13 percent reflects our ongoing commitment to our partnership with Jennings," said Chief of Police Timothy Fitch. "We still have a lot of work to do as we show the Councilmen and Councilwomen that they made the correct choice for the citizens of their city."
