St. Louis (KSDK) -- It's a device that helps parents keep track of their teen drivers but now some people hope it can have a new use.

AAA just came out with their version of a GPS-based device that plugs into most cars. And while your teen is on the road, parents can get alerts from their home computer.

AAA says the new device called OnBoard is a tool to coach teen drivers. Parents sign on to a password protected website and set speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries.

If the teen leaves the boundary you set for them, comes home late, drives over the speed you'd prefer, or even unplugs the device, parents receive an alert. You can also pinpoint where the car is on a map.

AAA spokesman says the device is not intended to spy on teens. Mike Right, VP of Public Affairs, said,  "The teen should know its happening. Obviousl,y for that person not to know, is kind of defeating the purpose. Because what you are looking for is teachable moments. You are looking for the controls on the youngster."

It's free to Triple A members who are insured and have a teen on their auto insurance policy.
