SPRINGFIELD, IL (AP) - Under a new state law, Illinois police will begin tracking the sale of medicine that can be used to make methamphetamine.
Gov. Pat Quinn signed the measure into law Friday. He says a pilot project in Williamson County has shown this approach helps police "nip production in the bud."
He says the pilot has helped police locate and seize 155 meth labs and make 231 arrests since 2009.
The law requires pharmacies to record sales of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine and block large purchases. The sales records, including names of buyers, will then be sent to the state police.
