Overnight gas leak causes evacuations
St. Louis (KSDK) - Fire officials say contractors working on underground utilities struck a four-inch gas line Thursday, which then ruptured a larger gas main near the intersection of Clayton Avenue and Vandeventer.
When firefighters arrived, they closed off a two block radius and evacuated a nearby neighborhood while they worked to shut off the leak.
Ameren also shut off power to the area as a precaution while they worked to control the leak. Power was restored a short time later.
Shortly before 3 a.m., officials with Laclede Gas were able to stop the leak and allow everyone back into their homes.
The intersection finally reopened around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
