St. Louis (KSDK) - A large water main break sent several feet of water into some basements in the Lemay area.

The break is threatening homes on Mount Olive Street at Avenue H.

Ann Dettemer with Missouri American Water says the 12 inch water main broke around 4:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Crews made the repairs, and full restoration was complete around10:30 p.m.

Dettemer says nine homes were damaged, and they have a restoration contractor on-site to help homeowners get quick cleanup relief overnight.

Missouri American Water expects to be on scene helping homeowners through Friday afternoon.

Dettemer said the problem was that there are no sewers in the area, so the water flowed to the lowest point.

Missouri American Water has brought in a restoration contractor to get in touch with homeowners and get the water pumped out of basements and dry as quickly as possible.  Then, homeowners will be given information to get in touch with them about insurance claims.
