St. Louis (KSDK)-- One person is dead, 15 others sickened after a carbon monoxide leak in north St. Louis.

Firefighters were called to a building in the 3900 block of St. Louis Avenue Saturday afternoon. Two of the adults were in critical condition when firefighters arrived, one of them died at the hospital.

A total of three adults and 13 children were taken to hospitals. One person remains in critical condition. Firefighters say the children are expected to recover.

Firefighters found high levels of carbon monoxide in the building. The family was using a gas generator to heat the house and that generator created the substantial amount of carbon monoxide. Firefighters also say the home did not have a carbon monoxide detector.

Firefighters say you should never use a gas powered generator indoors or in any confined space. They also encourage everyone to get a carbon monoxide detector.
