St. Louis (KSDK) - A St. Louis judge says the city's red light cameras are illegal. The city disagrees and vows to fight the judge's ruling. But the big question is, what does that mean for you?

"You don't know who to pay attention to, which one to listen to, so if you do get a ticket, you don't know if you should pay it or if you should ignore it," said driver Carrie Markowski.

Markowski has already received and paid three red light tickets in the time since the city has installed them. Of course, she'd be happy not to ever pay another.

"One hundred dollars is enough," Markowski said. "Let alone a late fee on top of it."

But unfortunately, a traffic law attorney says, this ruling doesn't mean she, and other drivers, can just throw those citations away.

"My advice is to consider those red light tickets valid and enforceable until the law is actually changed," said attorney Andrea Rogers.

Rogers says since the city plans to appeal, this case could go on for a while. That means you could still get red light tickets in the meantime.

"Eventually they will catch up with you, they're not going to ignore you," Rogers said. "Eventually you will get a letter from an attorney in Texas that does all the collection work for the city."

And if you ignore that, Rogers say, the law firm could send you into collections.

So that means red light runners will probably need to keep paying those citations until the law is changed for good.

The city has 30 days to appeal the ruling.
