Albuquerque, NM (KOAT/CNN) - Police in New Mexico say a burglary suspect left more than he took, including a clue that led straight to him.
Alan McClelland came back from an Easter Sunday hike to find that his car was broken into.
"The panels were pulled off. A lot of stuff had been scattered. The only thing that I could really find missing was the face plate from the stereo," said McClelland.
And that's all. Sure, the burglar ransacked his car and took the stereo's faceplate, and McClelland was livid until he found something that wasn't his, but belonged to the burglar.
"The fact that he left his wallet behind for me kind of put a smile on my face. I would say," he said.
McClelland even snapped a photo of the suspect's license. He just couldn't believe it.
"It had his EBT card, had his state-issued ID. It had his bus pass everything else that could lead anyone right to his house," he said.
Turns out, police say Joseph Williams had already been booked on an outstanding warrant. Now he'll also face burglary charges for allegedly breaking into McClelland's car.
Now McClelland wonders when the suspect realized he dropped his wallet.
"I wonder if he thought, 'Where's my missing wallet? Maybe, I left it in the car that I ripped off earlier," he said.
Williams was released from jail on Tuesday.
