St. Louis (KSDK) - A Missouri House committee approved a pension reform bill for St. Louis firefighters, just days before Mayor Slay's plan comes up for a vote.

Bill 1857 was voted out of the House retirement committee Thursday morning; Representative Mike Leara of Sunset Hills is the sponsor.

Leara calls it a compromise bill which includes significant changes to the current pension plan, but St. Louis City Hall officials doubt that the bill will make it much further and are hoping that Slay's own bill will pass in the Board of Aldermen next week.

Unlike Leara's bill, the mayor wants the city to take control of the pension fund.

Firefighter's Association President Chris Molitor says he's pleased that Leara's bill is moving forward in Jefferson City.

The firefighters oppose local control of the pension plan.
