Bloomfield Township, MI (WXYZ/CNN) - A 74-year-old Michigan grandmother was in court Monday to face charges she shot and killed her 17-year-old grandson.
Sandra Layne was charged with open murder, which means the jury will decide if she is guilty of first or second-degree murder.
Layne's attorney says it appears her grandson was "troubled."
"According to what I've learned there were scales, bags, screens and I'm not sure what the actual substance was but it appears this young man may have been involved in using or selling drugs also," said defense attorney Mitchell Ribitwer.
Hoffman called 911 after police said his grandmother shot him eight times.
The teen died later at the hospital.
It's not clear what prompted the shooting.
