CNN - She is educated and worldly. And she used to be outspoken on human rights.

But Syria's first lady Asma Al-Assad has remained mostly silent throughout 18 months of strife and violence.

Her parents came from the battered city of Homs. According to written accounts, her marriage to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was secretive.

Asma Al-Assad has stayed out of view for most of the 18-months of the conflict in Syria. But as CNN's Ivan Watson shows us, the first lady was at one point, outspoken.
