St. Charles County, MO (KSDK) - The newest member of the St. Charles Police Department joined its ranks Thursday.

Phoenix is a K-9 officer. He'll soon be trained in tracking, drug detection and protective skills. He was a gift from the Grant Anthony Jansen Foundation.

Jansen was a St. Charles K-9 officer and died in a car crash in 2008.

His wife started the foundation in his name.

The St. Charles police chief said Thursday's gift helps Jansen's legacy live on.

"Grant was a well respected individual in law enforcement community and a canine handler. So this is will always be in remembrance of Grant, every time we see Phoenix out in the street working," said Chief Lawrence Stulce.

Phoenix will be partnered with a member of the department.

The start-up cost for a canine officer is about $10,000.
