St. Louis County, MO (KSDK) - An election that's already costing St. Louis County taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars is costing even more.

The problem race includes two State House incumbents who faced off in the 87th district primary because of redistricting.

Unofficial results showed that MO Rep. Stacey Newman defeated Rep. Susan Carlson by a single vote. But, more than 100 voters were given incorrect ballots.

Now there will be a re-election which will take place on Monday.

"Because it is not at the normal scheduled time and there is nothing else on the ballot that day I just am concerned that a lot of voters won't come out and vote and that would be too bad," said Rep. Carlson.

Constituents got a letter in the mail on Saturday saying voters need to bring a "Signature I.D." to the polls on Monday. But that is not the law in the State of Missouri and now some voters are wondering when the problems will end.

Rita Heard Days, the St. Louis County Board of Elections Director, says this special election will cost taxpayers about $50,000.

"I do recognize that the people are sensitive to this I am sensitive to this. But, when we are dealing with human beings these kinds of things do happen," said Days.

The St. Louis County Election Board sent constituents a letter to remind them of the special election. However, it said voters must bring "a Signature I.D." which isn't required by the state of Missouri.

"These issues to me are unimaginable to happen to any candidate let alone going forth with a new election," said Rep. Newman.

"We have printing on a template and the template has not been changed," said Days. So, voters will be getting yet another letter this week reportedly with the correct information.

"We want people to come out. We want to assure them that we are doing everything that we possibly can to make sure that this is a good election," said Days.

The polls will be open on Monday, September 24th from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. You will need to bring one of five different forms of personal identification. One of those items could even be a bank statement or a utility bill.
