Madison, Ill. (KSDK) -- At the NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park Saturday, there was a small explosion and fire on the race track.
It happened toward the end of a funny car drag race. A Newschannel 5 videographer captured the incident. You can see it in the attached video story.
"On the way down the track one of the funny car bodies blew off at over 250 miles per hour," said Gateway Owner and President Curtis Francois. Francois said the driver was not seriously injured.
Meanwhile, it appears Gateway has avoided crashing and burning. While things were pretty quiet there two years ago, Gateway is noisy now. Officials have signed a 20-year deal with NHRA to continue holding the popular event that brings tens of thousands of poeple to the St. Louis area.
Francois said Saturday, "It's just been a fantastic day today. And yesterday. Yesterday we broke an attendance record; today's a sell-out."
Francois said 15,000 race fans turned out Friday. Attendance Saturday was 20,000.
