WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.'s resignation letter has been read aloud in the U.S. House.
The chamber was adjourned last week for the Thanksgiving holiday when Jackson resigned in a letter to Speaker John Boehner. Back in session Tuesday, the House heard the letter read aloud by a clerk.
In the letter, the Chicago Democrat cites deteriorating health and his battle with bipolar disorder. He also acknowledges that he's the subject of a federal probe and says he's cooperating with investigators and accepts responsibility for his "mistakes."
The investigation is reportedly focused on the possible misuse of campaign funds. Jackson went on a leave of absence in June and underwent treatment for depression at the Mayo Clinic.
A special election will be held early next year to choose a replacement.
