Stan and Lil Musial
St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial sits with his wife, Lillian, before he tears down the number six on the countdown clock representing 6 games left of the regular season on September 14, 2005 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
St. Louis (KSDK) - NewsChannel 5 has confirmed Lil Musial, wife of Stan Musial, has died at 91.
Sources say she had been ill for some time.
Lil was born in 1920, and one of eight children. She first met Stan when she was 15-years-old when her father took her to watch the Donora Zinca play in 1934.
Musial was pitching for the semi-pro team at the time. They became high school sweethearts and married in May 1940.
St. Louis Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. released the following statement:
"We have lost a valued member of the Cardinals family. Lil was the love of Stan's life - - a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of so many people. From her selfless work in organizing the Cardinals Pinch Hitters group to her more recent efforts to help homeless, runaway girls with the Covenant House, Lil was always helping others. The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Stan, their children Richard, Gerry, Janet and Jean, and their eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren."
