Maryland Heights, Mo (KSDK) -- A 14-year-old boy injured in a drive-by shooting is learning his life can go on and he continue to knock down 12 footers, even though he cannot walk.
Deontay Pearson, may be Ranken Jordan's Pediatric Hospital's finest pure athlete.
You never want to play Pearon in Wii baseball as Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny discovered one day at the hospital.
It was through baseball that Matheny got to Deontay. Matheny came to the hospital in December and learned the boy was not doing his rehabilitation exercises. That's when the pair struck a deal. Matheny would reward the teen by bringing him out on the Busch Stadium field for Cardinals batting practice, if he did his exercises.
Deontay did his exercises every day and emailed Matheny weekly about his progress.
The pair kept their deal and Matheny welcomed Deontay to the stadium for batting practice Wednesday. He got to meet his favorite Cardinal David Freese, get his picture taken with Matt Holliday and get an autograph from Daniel Descalso.
