Palermo, Italy (Sports Network) - Promising Brit Laura Robson upset second-
seeded Italian favorite Roberta Vinci in Thursday's second-round action at the
$220,000 Italiacom Open.
The 18-year-old Robson doused Vinci in 6-3, 7-5 fashion on the red clay at
Country Time Club.
Meanwhile, third-seeded German Julia Goerges received a walkover into the
quarterfinals when Hungarian qualifier Katalin Marosi pulled out of their
scheduled second-rounder, citing a right shoulder injury.
Also, fifth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro got past Anna Tatishvili,
6-1, 3-2, as the Georgian retired on Day 4, and eighth-seeded Czech Barbora
Zahlavova Strycova overcame American Julia Cohen 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit top-seeded Italian Sara Errani against
Romanian Alexandra Cadantu; Goerges versus Zahlavova Strycova; Suarez Navarro
against Robson; and Spaniard Estrella Cabeza Candela versus Romanian Irina-
Camelia Begu.
Last month's surprise French Open runner-up Errani was the 2008 Palermo
champion and 2009 runner-up.
