Stratham, NH (Sports Network) - Max McGreevy carded a 4-under 68 on Monday to take a 2-stroke lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur.

The Oklahoma resident played the back nine first at The Golf Club of New England. He collected birdies on the 12th and 16th, but stumbled to a bogey at No. 18 to turn at 1-under par.

McGreevy carded back-to-back birdies at third and fourth before faltering to another bogey on the par-5 fifth. McGreevy came right back with birdies at six and seven to reach 4-under. He parred his last two holes to lead after the opening round.

Jim Liu, who won this title in 2010, posted a 2-under 70 and was joined in second place by Joshua Lee, Nicolas Echavarria and Andrew Bonner. Liu was the youngest winner in event history.

Andrej Bevins and Tom Swanson shared sixth place at 1-under 71.

Floridians Ryan Stovash and Clancy Waugh headline a group of 12 players at even-par 72.

Andy Zhang, 14, and Beau Hossler were two of the big stories this year at the U.S. Open. Zhang was the youngest competitor ever, while Hossler contended for the first three days.

Zhang is tied for 31st at 2-over 74. Hossler struggled to a 5-over 77 and shares 83rd place. He'll have to post a good round Tuesday to make the match play portion of the championship.

The second round of stroke play will be contested on Tuesday. The match play portion of the championship runs from Wednesday to Saturday.
