Bastad, Sweden (Sports Network) - Reigning champion Polona Hercog upset
second-seeded Julia Goerges in Wednesday's second-round action at the $220,000
Swedish Open.
The unseeded Slovenian Hercog handled the German Goerges 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in 1
hour, 42 minutes on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium.
Hercog beat Sweden's own Johanna Larsson in last year's Bastad finale.
Additional upsets were avoided when fifth-seeded Russian Anastasia
Pavlyuchenkova topped Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-4, 6-0 and seventh seed
Mona Barthel of Germany dismissed Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 7-5.
One other second-round result saw Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova erase Ukrainian
Lesia Tsurenko 7-5, 6-3. Pironkova will meet Hercog in Friday's quarterfinals.
The first round concluded Wednesday when France's Mathilde Johansson drilled
38-year-old American lucky-loser Jill Craybas 6-4, 6-1 and the aforementioned
Larsson got past Belarusian Olga Govortsova 7-6 (8-6), 4-3, as Govortsova
retired due to an illness.
Craybas entered the draw Tuesday when top-seeded Italian star Sara Errani
pulled out, citing a shoulder injury. The surprise French Open runner-up
Errani was fresh off her clay-court title in Palermo in her native Italy last
week.
The 2012 Bastad champion will earn $37,000.
