Carlsbad, CA (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli overcame
18 double faults and rallied in the final set to beat American Vania King,
6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round at the $740,000 Mercury Insurance Open
tennis event.
The former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli was pushed to a match that lasted 3
hours, 10 minutes Wednesday before advancing to the quarterfinals. The
Frenchwoman, who is making her seventh appearance at this tournament, was
behind 2-4 in the third set before rallying.
Nadia Petrova, the fourth seed from Russia, downed American Alexa Glatch, 6-4,
6-3 on the hardcourts at La Costa Resort and Spa.
The lone ranked player to be dispatched was eighth-seeded South African
Chanelle Scheepers, who was beaten by American Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 6-2. The
26-year-old Lepchenko did not face a break on her serve while converting on 3-
of-4 break opportunities against her opponent.
One other Wednesday affair saw Taiwanese qualifier Yung-Jan Chan dismiss Brit
Heather Watson 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
The 2012 Carlsbad champ will claim $96,000.
