Daly City, CA (Sports Network) - Minjee Lee was playing in a USGA championship
for the first time.
She's 1-for-1.
Lee, a 16-year-old Australian, rallied from three holes down Saturday to beat
Alison Lee in the 36-hole final of the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
Minjee Lee held a 1-up lead through the first 18 holes but had fallen 3-down
after 30.
She won the next three holes, however, going par-birdie-par while Alison Lee
went bogey-par-bogey.
Minjee Lee won her fourth straight hole, the par-4 16th at Lake Merced Golf
Club, after her opponent three-putted for a bogey. She sealed the win with
pars on the last two holes.
It was only the third time players with the same last name met in a USGA
final, and first time since 1932.
While Minjee was competing in her first USGA championship, 17-year-old Alison
Lee was playing her 12th.
Both girls had moved on to the final with big upsets in Friday's semifinals --
Minjee beat defending champion and world No. 2 amateur Ariya Jutanugarn, while
Alison topped world No. 1 Lydia Ko, both winning by 2 & 1 scores.
The finalists are not related.
