Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Friday to make his season debut in the opener of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

Carpenter hadn't pitched since winning Game 7 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers last October. The right-hander experienced shoulder issues prior to the 2012 campaign and underwent surgery in July for thoracic outlet syndrome.

The 37-year-old veteran, who went 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA last season, returns with his team in the midst of another playoff push, as the Cardinals have won four straight and sit 2 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL's second wild card position.

For his career, Carpenter has posted a 144-92 record with a 3.76 ERA over 347 games -- 329 starts -- with the Toronto Blue Jays and Cardinals.

To open a spot on the 40-man roster, the Cardinals outrighted the contract of pitcher John Gaub to Triple-A Memphis.
