Shanghai, China (Sports Network) - Marin Cilic and Richard Gasquet were a
pair of seeded winners, while world No. 10 Nicolas Almagro suffered an
opening-round upset Monday at the $3.5 million Shanghai Masters, the eighth of
nine ATP Masters events this year.
The ninth-seeded Almagro gave way to resurgent German Tommy Haas, 4-6, 7-6
(7-4), 6-2, on the hardcourts at Qizhong Tennis Center. The 34-year-old oft-
injured former world No. 2 Haas has reached three ATP finals this year.
Meanwhile, the 10th-seeded Croat Cilic topped Poland's Lukasz Kubot 7-5, 6-3
and the 11th-seeded Frenchman Gasquet whipped American qualifier Brian Baker
6-2, 6-3 on Day 2. Gasquet picked up his first title in more than two years
two weeks ago in Bangkok.
American Sam Querrey drubbed Chinese wild card Zhe Li 6-3, 6-1, while former
top-10 star Tommy Robredo of Spain got past Russian qualifier Alex Bogomolov
Jr. 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Additional first-round wins came for South African Kevin Anderson, France's
Benoit Paire, Italian Andreas Seppi, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, and Ukrainian
Alexandr Dolgopolov. Dimitrov will battle world No. 1 star Novak Djokovic on
Tuesday.
Seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco, eighth-seeded American John Isner and
Cilic will see second-round action on Tuesday. Monaco will face Spaniard
Fernando Verdasco, the 6-foot-9 Isner will encounter Anderson, and Cilic
will meet Slovak Martin Klizan.
In some more opening-round play on Day 3, 12th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic
and 14th-seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori will be among those taking to the
courts. Nishikori upset Raonic in last week's finale in Tokyo.
British star Andy Murray captured his second straight Shanghai title by
beating Spaniard David Ferrer in last year's finale. The top seeds this year
are 2010 runner-up Roger Federer, last week's Beijing titlist Djokovic and
Murray.
The 2012 Shanghai champ will collect $669,450.
