Auckland, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was a
first-round winner on Tuesday in the season-opening ASB Classic tennis event.
Poland's Radwanska easily slipped past Greta Arn of Hungary 6-2, 6-2 on the
hardcourts at ASB Tennis Centre. Arn was the champ here in 2011.
The final match of the night saw second-seeded German Julia Goerges post a
6-3, 6-4 victory over qualifier Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Sixth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan took down Spain's Lara
Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-3, 6-2, but fifth-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea retired
after one set to Great Britain's Heather Watson.
Germany's Mona Barthel, the eighth seed, had no problems with American Grace
Min 6-1, 6-3.
Other winners on Tuesday included New Zealand's Marina Erakovic and
Switzerland's Romina Oprandi.
This event serves as a tune-up for the Australian Open, which starts January
14.
