Now we know why it took so long for Rex Ryan to remove Mark Sanchez's name from the top of the depth chart: It was written in permanent ink.
In the latest bizarre twist to the everlasting circus of the New York Jets, the Friday cover of The New York Daily News shows a shirtless, vacationing Ryan with a sexy tattoo depicting his wife wearing only a Sanchez No. 6 jersey.
It was the worst use of ink by a member of the Jets since the team signed Sanchez to a contract extension that guaranteed him $8.25 million in 2013.
The newspaper saw Ryan sunbathing in the Bahamas, days after his Jets finished a disappointing 6-10 season. He was spied with two tattoos on his right arm. One was a shamrock that included the name of his wife, Michelle, and two children, Payton and Seth. The other was the "kinky inky" of Michelle, who is best known for her starring role in a foot fetish video that was uncovered two years ago. She's seductively posed on her knees while making "come hither" eyes and wearing Sanchez's number.
It's both baffling and completely understandable at the same time. Does Rex wear all his (Jets) emotions on his (tattooed) sleeve? We wonder if the inked Michelle has a Santonio Holmes' captain's "C" somewhere on her jersey. And we shudder to think about what horrors befall a theoretical tattooed Tim Tebow on Ryan's body. That view can't be pretty.
Ryan wouldn't comment when approached by the newspaper's reporter.
