(The Chirp) -- It's never easy taking over the job previously filled by someone who was very successful.  Now imagine filling the shoes of a man who will arguably be inducted into the Hall of Fame for the same job you just took.

Such is the life of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.  Matheny's rookie year as skipper of the club came one season after La Russa announced he was going out on top.  He would retire a world champion having just won the 2011 World Series.

Working in the shadow of such a man and his accomplishments could certainly be daunting, but Matheny had an edge.  First he was already apart of the "Cardinal Family."  Second he already enjoyed a good relationship with La Russa having played for him for 5 seasons (2000-2004). La Russa was quoted many times as saying, Matheny was one of his smartest and toughest players who ever played for him.

So today when Tony La Russa arrived at Cardinals Spring Training it was more of a reunion of old friends, than the old boss taking a look at what you've done with team.
