Jupiter, FL (Sports Network) - Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs helping the Miami Marlins to an 8-3 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals in the spring training opener for both teams.
John Maine, who made his first start since the 2011 season, allowed one hit and struck out one batter over two innings pitched to earn the win.
Miami broke out the bats early, as Juan Pierre led off with a triple and Stanton drove him home on a groundout. Joe Mahoney hit a double in the same inning, and crossed home plate on Donovan Solano's single. The Marlins led, 2-0.
Miami added two runs in the bottom of the second, but not before David Freese hit a solo shot in the top half, putting the Cards on the scoreboard.
Alfredo Silverio, Miami's designated hitter, homered off Randy Choate in the fifth. The Marlins added one run in the sixth and eighth inning, respectively.
St. Louis starter Trevor Rosenthal picked up the loss and allowed five hits, four earned runs and walked two batters in two innings pitched.
