Not even a torn ligament in her left shoulder could stop St. Louis native and South Dakota pole vaulter Bethany Buell. Buell in her first year of Division I competition became a national champion on Friday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Buell, a junior tied the D-I national championship record with a jump of 14-51/4. Buell is the USD's first track national champion since 2008. Buell missed most of her season and didn't compete for the first time until May 9. She will have surgery this summer to correct the torn ligament.
