ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will return to St. Louis Wednesday for an MRI on his ailing knee.
The All-Star and MVP candidate had to leave the second game of the Cardinals doubleheader loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team referred to the knee as being sprained.
Molina allowed a passed ball in the second inning, and then left the game in favor of Rob Johnson in the fourth.
Molina told reporters after the game that the knee needs time to heal. He has been placed on the disabled list.
The Cardinals may have to shift their thinking in the final hours before the trading deadline. Backups Johnson and Tony Cruz do not extensive experience as a starter, with Johnson starting 75 games with Seattle in 2009 being the largest sample size.
