Cancun, MX (Sports Network) - Cleanthony Early put in 25 points and was a
rebound shy of a double-double as the Wichita State Shockers got the best of
the Iowa Hawkeyes, 75-63, in a battle of unbeaten squads in the Riviera
Division championship game of the Cancun Challenge.
Early came off the bench but played a game-high 30 minutes for Wichita State
(6-0). Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points and handed out five assists while
Carl Hall added 12 points.
Aaron White tallied 14 points for Iowa (5-1) which suffered its first loss of
the season. Also in double figures for the Hawkeyes were Eric May (13), Josh
Oglesby (12) and Roy Devyn Marble (11).
Both teams shot poorly in the first half with Wichita State at 39.1 percent
from the floor and Iowa behind that at 36.4 percent. Despite that the Hawkeyes
led 35-33 at the half by hitting on 7-of-8 shots from beyond the arc.
Iowa went cold in the second half and hit on just 4-of-24 shots, including 1-
of-7 from beyond the arc. Wichita State shot 43.8 percent in the final 20
minutes to earn the win.
Wichita State pounded the Hawkeyes inside outscoring them 30-6 on points in
the paint while owning a 38-30 edge in rebounds.
