Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Amath M'Baye scored 19 points as the Oklahoma
Sooners defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers, 77-70, for third place in the
Old Spice Classic.
M'Baye was 5-of-6 from the field with six rebounds in the victory for the
Sooners (4-1). Je'lon Hornbeak added 14 points, Andrew Fitzgerald tallied nine
off the bench, while both Steven Pledger and Romero Osby scored eight points
and cleared six rebounds.
Juwan Staten finished 5-of-8 from the field for 15 points to go along with
three assists for West Virginia (1-3). Deniz Kilicli and Gary Browne each
added 13 points and four rebounds, followed by Aaric Murray who tallied eight
points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Oklahoma led 42-37 at halftime after shooting 50.0 percent from the field,
while the Mountaineers knocked down only 34.5 percent. Oklahoma took the lead
with 11:48 remaining in the first half and never looked back.
In the second half WVU converted only 37.9 percent from the floor and 1-of-8
behind the three-point line, en route to the seven-point setback.
Oklahoma turned eight Mountaineer turnovers into 14 points, while also scoring
32 points in the paint compared to just 20 for WVU.
This was West Virginia's first look at a Big 12 team as a member of the
conference.
