El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - A pair of Chris Washburn free throws with only
seconds remaining turned the tide for the Miners of Texas-El Paso as they
squeezed out a 55-54 win over the New Mexico State Aggies in non-conference
play at the Don Haskins Center.
Chris Washburn finished with seven points, all of them coming at the charity
stripe, while Julian Washburn accounted for a game-high 20 points for the
Miners (2-4) in the victory. John Bohannon added 15 points and Jacques
Streeter seven points and a game-high seven assists.
The Aggies (3-4) were paced by Tyrone Watson who tallied 13 points, the only
player to score in double figures for the visitors.
A close game for much of the first half, NMSU claimed a 32-28 advantage at the
break thanks to 50 percent shooting from the floor and a 9-of-13 showing at
the free-throw line.
In the second half the Aggies made a total of only eight field goals and
missed a potential game-winner in the final moments when a three-point shot by
Daniel Mullings missed the mark.
New Mexico State held a slight lead on the glass, 28-23, but that made little
difference as the visitors turned the ball over 20 times on the night.
