Reno, NV (Sports Network) - A Deonte Burton jumper with three seconds
remaining proved to be the difference for Nevada as the Wolf Pack slipped by
UC Davis by a final of 84-83 in non-conference play at the Lawlor Events
Center.
Burton finished the meeting with a game-high 26 points for Nevada (4-2),
adding seven assists and five rebounds for the hosts. Malik Story accounted
for 23 points and Jordan Burris 11 off the bench for the program as well.
The Aggies (1-3) were paced by Ryan Sypkens who tallied 24 points on a
sizzling 8-of-11 shooting behind the three-point line in a reserve role. Corey
Hawkins responded with 15 points, Josh Ritchart 13 and J.T. Adenrele 12 points
in the losing cause.
UC Davis shot not only 54.5 percent from the floor in the first half, but also
5-of-8 beyond the arc in the frame, and yet the team still trailed at the
break by five points, 41-36. The lead reached as high as 12 points for the
Pack in the first 20 minutes of play.
Nevada again allowed the visitors to have open looks at the basket in the
second half, resulting in 55.2 percent accuracy for UC Davis, but that's
exactly where the Pack was in the period as well. A three-point conversion by
Sypkens with 16 seconds remaining put the Aggies up by a point, setting the
stage for Burton's game-winner.
UC Davis made goods on 54.9 percent from the floor on the night and 11-of-20
beyond the arc and still somehow ended up on the short end of the score.
