Chattanooga, TN (Sports Network) - John Brown scored a game-high 25 points to
lead the High Point Panthers, as they edged the Austin Peay Governors, 76-74,
in the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic at McKenzie Arena.
Brown added six rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team for the
Panthers (5-7). Allan Chaney added 10 points and Dejuan McGaughy dished out
six assists.
Anthony Campbell led the Governors (4-10) with 23 points, while Will Triggs
scored 14 points, Chris Horton finished with 13 points and Travis Betran
chipped in 10 points.
Neither team shot over 39.0 percent in the first half. High Point was the
better of the two squads, hitting 38.2 percent of their its goal attempts,
as the Panthers took a 39-34 lead into intermission. Austin Peay managed to
make just 34.5 percent of its shots from the field in the half.
After halftime, both teams picked up their game, with the Panthers connecting
on 48 percent from the field and the Governors hitting on 48.5 percent. The
Panthers did have a 12-6 advantage at the free-throw line in the second half.
Trailing by two with 6:23 to play, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to pull
ahead for good, and they held on for the victory.
High Point converted 11 Austin Peay turnovers into 14 points. The Governors
had a slight rebounding edge, 41-39.
