Ypsilanti, MI (Sports Network) - Brian Walsh dropped in 16 points to lead the
Akron Zips to a 70-62 triumph over the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Mid-American
Conference action at the Convocation Center.
Nick Harney registered 14 points, Zeke Marshall tallied 12 points and three
blocks and Demetrius Treadwell chipped in 11 points for Akron (20-4, 11-0 MAC)
which extended the longest win streak in the nation to 16 games. Alex Abreu
handed out nine assists for the Zips but also had nine turnovers.
Glenn Bryant scored 11 points and J.R. Sims and Anthony Strickland each added
10 for Eastern Michigan (11-13, 4-6) which has lost three of its last four
outings.
In the first half Akron shot 50 percent from the field and held Eastern
Michigan to just seven field goals on 30.4 percent shooting. However a 9-1
edge from the free-throw line kept the Eagles within range as they trailed by
only a 29-26 margin at the break.
The hot shooting continued in the second half for the Zips who nailed 56.5
percent of their shots from the field after halftime. Eastern Michigan shot at
a 42.9 percent rate in the final 20 minutes but this time was on the short end
of a 10-9 margin from the charity stripe.
Eastern Michigan did outscore Akron, 21-13, in points off turnovers. Akron
never trailed in the contest though there were three ties.
