STL-area man wins Metropolitan Open

ST. ALBANS, Mo. - The Metropolitan Open Golf Tournament held at the Country Club at St. Albans has become a big-time event. Plaza Motors sponsors it, 66 pros entered it, and they had 144 total players.

The overall purse was $56,000 with $15,500 going to the winner, who comes from the St. Louis area.

Twenty-four-year-old Chris Brant stands 6 feet tall, weighs 180 pounds, and has a swing out of Golf Digest. Before Saturday, the Edwardsville native had never won a professional event.

But his tap on the sixth playoff hole ended the drought and made Brant a winner. He finished the metropolitan open at 5 under par.

His father, Steve, has been there every step of the way, first driving him to tourneys when Brant was younger. That's why the hug between the two meant so much after the championship.

Brant has the game, but the walk is a long and difficult one to the PGA tour. Over 1,000 alone with try to make the tour, and just 50 will make it.

But it would mean so much to Brant to one day make the tour.
